All About Naarei (The Heron)- The first boat launch of Pondy Nautic

Naarei (The Heron) was the 1st boat launched by Pondy Nautic last week. It was a soft launch for doing the checks before the grand opening with bookings for clients.

With this post we give you a brief history of the "Naarei".
The word "Naarei" comes from the Tamil word for the word Heron(the bird). The inspiration for the name comes these birds..... these elegant Herons which we saw flying day after day in the backwaters while we constructed Pondy Nautic offices. However Carolina Angler is the name given by the architect who was inspired by the US southeastern style fishing boats.

It took us approximately 1 year to build this boat.
The horsepower of "Naarei" is at a huge 250 HP however this is necessary for fishing purposes &  to quickly go and come back from faraway spots.
Last week's launch was a way to check and verify the Boat's engines as they cannot be checked on the dry land since they are cooled by the water only.Such trials are necessary to check if the engines are working properly. Additionally Propellers and electronic devices are also checked and adjusted as necessary .
The general behavior of the boat is also verified ,with and without speed as one would do with a new car.  These are also necessary for the safety aspect of the boat.
All in all it was a hugely successful soft launch. Watch out for our Official opening of the bookings in the coming month.

Ever wanted to wake up early and soaking in  the early morning sun above your head and the sea beneath your feet. That day is coming soon for Pondy Nautic is soon going to launch the morning boat ride . Here are a few details

We will offer a historical and educational 2 hours ride on a 10m long speed boat to discover Pondicherry from the sea. Nestled on the Coromandel Coast line since the 15^th century, one can trace the maritime activities of Pondy back to the Roman Times. With its long lasting traditions, fishermen villages, customs and legends, you will learn more about this peaceful city from a different angle. Get to know more about its local fishing routine, history and facts, be amazed by the beautiful view point on the Promenade.

Building a Motorboat-Pondy Nautic

Building a motor boat is no child's play ..it takes dedication, eye for details and perseverance. That was what we set out with when we had in mind our motorboat , the speed factor of Pondy Nautic. This is what we thought will be for those who crave the need for speed, to feel the wind in their hair.

We first started with the design, choosing the right type of wood, skeleton of the boat and then the hull. Each hull design reacts differently to the sea variables--and even two boats with the same design may act differently depending on their load and trim.Hence we ensured optimum care during this period of construction.

And then came into the turning of the hull. Every one who builds a boat upside down is faced with the task of turning it over at some point. Small, relatively lightweight boats present no real problems. It took a lot of man power to carefully turn it. We usually use gantries or other clever devices to rotate large hulls. The boat was rotated like a large turkey or roast.

And then we started with the interiors .At the same time we were building “Lorelei” our catamaran as well as developing land for the offices of Pondy Nautic.

Finally we  were at the phase of finishing up and painting of the boat.

The Inspiration Behind Pondy Nautic

It all started while looking over the vast expanse of the beautiful sea flowing along the coast of Pondicherry. It got us wondering if some sails and nice boats dotted on the horizon would look good on it.....moreover it can be fun!With this inspiration behind, we set forward to make this idea come true. With the first drawing on the paper to the woodwork, from groundwork to works on the water, little by little we saw the idea come alive.We decided to embrace the different kinds of pleasure that one can feel while sailing and to create programmes that can cover the full array of possibilities through it.As  sailors we have had great experiences and sometimes not so. Hence we are aware of what it takes to have to get the best of   the sea exploration and share it with you.Above all we are sure that sailing on the seas of Pondicherry, exploring its beauty and vastness would be a wonderful getaway. This is what Pondy Nautic is all about.
